NOTE: As of Oct. 1, 2008,
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP) is the new name for the
federal Food Stamp Program. |
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,
formerly referred to as "The Food Stamp Program", provides monthly
benefits that help low-income households buy the food they need for good
health. The program aims to increase the food purchasing power of
low-income households and the nutritional adequacy of their diets. The
Food Stamp Program serves both public assistance and non-public
assistance households.
You may qualify for food stamps if you:
- work for low wages
- are unemployed or work part-time
- receive welfare or other assistance payments
- are elderly or disabled and live on a low
income
Food Stamps benefits are determined based on
income, household size, expenses, and resources.
Benefits are provided on an Electronic Benefits
(EBT) Card that is used like an ATM card and accepted at most grocery
stores.
